The schedule has been advanced in four regions
The Registrar General of India has announced that the population enumeration phase of Census 2027 will begin on December 1, 2026 in Goa, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and the non-snow-bound areas of Uttarakhand. The exercise in these regions will continue until January 4, 2027, followed by a short revisional round from January 5 to January 9.
Residents can self-enumerate before field visits
People in the four regions will have the option to complete self-enumeration between November 16 and November 30. The process allows households to submit their details digitally before enumerators begin the main population count. The revised schedule is important because all four regions are expected to see Assembly elections in early 2027.
How this fits into the national census
Snow-bound and non-synchronous areas follow a separate timetable because of weather and accessibility. The population enumeration for most of the rest of the country is expected to begin in February 2027. Census data will cover demographic, social, cultural and economic characteristics and will influence planning and public policy for years.
Why it matters for Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is India’s most populous state and one of the regions scheduled for the early phase. The timetable means government machinery will have to manage census preparations alongside the approach to the state election. For residents, the most important dates are the self-enumeration period beginning November 16 and the main enumeration starting December 1.
