Germany Watches Saxony-Anhalt Vote as AfD Seeks Historic State Victory

Voters in Saxony-Anhalt are casting ballots in a closely watched election that could give the far-right AfD an unprecedented state-level breakthrough.

A state election with national consequences

Voters in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt are choosing a new state parliament today in an election being watched far beyond the region. The Alternative for Germany, or AfD, has led opinion polls for months and is seeking a breakthrough that could make it the first far-right party to take power at state level in modern post-war Germany.

Polls show a wide lead, but governing is a separate question

Recent surveys cited by Reuters placed the AfD at a little over 40%, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic Union around 23%. Germany’s electoral system means smaller parties crossing or failing to cross the 5% threshold can significantly affect the distribution of seats. Even if the AfD finishes first, forming a government may depend on whether it wins an outright majority because mainstream parties have maintained a policy of refusing coalitions with it.

Why the vote matters nationally

The election is being treated as a test of public sentiment toward Chancellor Merz’s federal government, particularly on migration, security and the economy. A strong AfD result could increase pressure on mainstream parties to rethink their political strategy while intensifying debate over the long-standing 'firewall' against cooperation with the party.

When results are expected

Official information says polling stations are open from 8:00 to 18:00 local time. Results will begin emerging after voting closes. UpTheGear will treat any result as provisional until official counts are available.
