A long-delayed IPO is moving closer
India’s National Stock Exchange is targeting the week beginning September 21 for its long-awaited stock market listing after receiving regulatory clearance, according to Reuters. The IPO has been discussed for years but was delayed by investigations and legal disputes connected with the exchange’s past co-location and market-access controversies.
Why this listing is unusually important
NSE operates the Nifty 50 and is one of the most important pieces of India’s financial-market infrastructure. It is also the world’s most active derivatives exchange by number of contracts traded. A public listing would give investors direct exposure to the company behind a large share of India’s equity and derivatives trading.
Valuation and structure
Reuters reported that NSE has been valued at roughly $55 billion in the unlisted market, while the potential IPO valuation could be around $47 billion. The transaction is expected to be primarily an offer for sale by existing shareholders rather than a large capital raise by the exchange itself. Final pricing remains subject to the book-building process and market conditions.
What investors should watch
Attention will now turn to the final price band, the opening of the book-building period and institutional demand. The listing also arrives during a busy period for Indian IPOs, meaning NSE will compete with other large offerings for investor capital.
