Delhi Building Collapse Kills Six as Government Plans Tougher Safety Audits

A five-storey building in Satya Niketan collapsed during the monsoon, killing six people and prompting Delhi authorities to promise stronger structural-safety rules.

What happened

A five-storey building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area collapsed, killing six people and injuring others. The property housed a boys’ hostel and had reportedly been undergoing renovation work before reopening to tenants.

Why investigators are looking at the structure

Authorities are examining whether water accumulation in the basement and ongoing construction weakened the building. The structure was more than five decades old, according to reporting on the incident.

Policy response

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government plans to introduce periodic structural audits and safety certification for buildings used by large numbers of people, including hostels, hospitals and educational institutions.
